| HELEN FITZGERALD - COLOURS OF AUSTRALIA Sunday 5th to Sunday 9th June Octagon ArtSpace, Bungendore Wood Works Gallery, 18 Malbon Street, Bungendore 02 6238 1682 www.bwoodworks.com.au Over recent years Helen Fitzgerald has pursued a program of extended visits to outback parts of the Australian environment. Treading both sides of life as a landscape and botanical artist, her trips to the source are essential in the pursuit of capturing the true nature of the landscape and its flora and fauna. Trips in 2012 to outback Birdsville and its famed ‘track’, her annual Lockhart botanical field trip to the Galore Hill Arboretum area complete with students and a 9000km odyssey to Albany in West Australia have ‘recharged my artistic batteries.’ These forays into the heart of this vast and ancient, yet colourful land have brought to Helen’s renewed attention the absolute beauty of the true colours of Australia. Our largest island continent not only exhibits, in its own special brand of light, the vivid coastal and hinterland beauty rich in greens, blues and yellows but also it’s unique red heartland that, while not often seen by most Australians, has long been home to many first Australians. The colours here are of the earth, rich in the eroded and weathered landscape to the point that the detritus of that reductive activity itself forms its unique colours. |

| 30 YEARS IN THE MAKING Throughout 2013 Bungendore Wood Works Gallery, 18 Malbon Street, Bungendore 02 6238 1682 www.bwoodworks.com.au Arriving in Bungendore from Manhattan, a journeyman in the making, with a desire to show wood works to everyone, I created a gallery in 1983 for woodworkers to display their works; where diversity is encouraged and fine craftsmanship essential. I, we, you, us made good on the promise and a new purpose built gallery opened in 1994. In 2013 we will celebrate thirty years and embark on a new journey with the next generation of wood makers. Handcrafted living is where we are now – the mind leading design then the hands working wood, this is our proud craft. Physical effort and imagination are the only limitations to our ambitions. We make for one – by one – and provide a connection with substance that endures our times. Our raw materials are of sun, soil and water; wood is a gift and our warm heritage. David Mac Laren Come ride with us through 2013 as we present an exhibition program that delivers on our promise — to offer our space to encourage woodworkers and fine artists, past, present and future, to display their workmanship, skills and ideas, whether they work with wood or on canvas, paper or board. |

CUP Tuesday 5th 3:00pm Flemington Racetrack, Melbourne www.melbournecup.com The first Melbourne Cup held in 1861 was certainly a dramatic event. According to legend, Archer, the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup, was reported to have walked 850 km (560 miles) from Nowra to Flemington to be a part of a race that one day would capture the spirit of a nation. While at the time the news of the death of the explorers Burke and Wills may have kept people away from the race, a modest crowd of four thousand watched the seventeen starters and the thrilling lead up. Before the race commenced, Twilight started early and was captured only after he had run the whole course, and tragically, two horses, Dispatch and Medora, had died after a fall. The following year Archer raced again to win his second successive Melbourne Cup. Although it is rumoured, he again had walked from Nowra to Flemington, many people thought it was more likely that he had travelled anonymously by ship. Despite his owner's intention to race Archer for a third Melbourne Cup, he was unable to do so because of a technical error. Archer's acceptance nomination to race failed to arrive in time because it was delayed in the post. As a result, owners scratched many horses, in a show of solidarity. This left a starting field of only seven horses that history shows was to be the smallest field of horses to race in the Melbourne Cup. At ten years of age, Archer fell in a race and was retired to stud but his place in history was forever cemented. The first Melbourne Cup winner was immortalised in the 1984 film Archer. |

| REMEMBRANCE DAY Monday 11th 10:45am Commemorative Service Remembrance Day, originally Armistice Day, has its origins in the Armistice that ended the First World War — The Great War, at the 11th hour of the 11th month in 1918. On that day the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. Red poppies are often worn on Remembrance Day. The tradition has its origins in a poem written in 1915 by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a doctor in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. Lieutenant Colonel McCrae noticed that, despite the devastation caused by the war to towns, farms and forests, thousands of small red poppies began growing everywhere in Spring. This inspired his poem, In Flanders Fields. Since 1921 wearing a poppy has enable Australians to show they have not forgotten the more than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have given their lives in wars and conflicts. The Commemorative Service is held to remember the sacrifice of those men and women who have died or suffered in war and conflicts and all those who have served. Thanks to Peter Hugonnet for historical information. |

BUNGENDORE COUNTRY MUSTER TBA Bungendore Showground, Matthews Lane and Village, (PO Box 460), Bungendore www.bungendorecountrymuster.com.au The festival begins on Saturday at 2pm with the Stan Coster Memorial Australian Bush Ballad Award being held at 8pm. Sunday is non stop music from 10am to 6pm. The event also flows into the town with busking in the street on Saturday, a bush poet’s breakfast and entertainment at various venues in the village leading up to the weekend at the showground. When Jim Snow opened the first Bungendore Country Muster in 1986 he predicted a great future for the festival and he got it right. The Bungendore Country Muster has continued and in 2006 celebrated its 21st birthday and each year it continues to go from strength to strength. The Muster is unique in that it is the only “all Australian” country music festival in Australia and has a core policy of existing for the betterment and benefit of the Bungendore community and Australian country music. All money raised during the festival goes to the local community and on improving the facilities for patrons. The festival is held at the local show ground and over the years the Muster Committee has made improvements with the building of a permanent stage, water tanks and in 2007 assisted with the local community in the installation of an eight cubicle shower block. With the patrons enjoying the atmosphere of staying at the showgrounds this was a much needed improvement. |

The event will be run along very similar lines to last year with the following significant changes – there will be no Corporate Event and there will be a parade of “Traditional” Carts at the start of the day. These “traditional” carts genuinely add to the spectacle of the day yet often prove not as competitive during actual racing. While still very much encouraging the traditional carts to race in the various categories what Braidwood Lions would like to do is to give the drivers and builders the opportunity to demonstrate their enterprise and design skills in a parade down the course at the start of the day. |
