The NSW South Coast is a unique, almost undiscovered, and thankfully underdeveloped part of the Australian coast. This, despite bordering Australia’s biggest city, Sydney, and hosting the continents's ninth largest urban area, Wollongong. This area is a haven for the sensitive painter, author, poet, musician, surfer or environmentalist. People like artists Ken Taber, Maynard Waters, John Sharman, Grace Paleg and Ian Lakey, all residents of this fragile coastal region, reduce this natural beauty to their two-dimensional canvas, board and paper for this exhibition.

Lerida Estate Winery will again host a two day Petanque tournament for players across Australia in mid September.
Bring some friends, family members or work colleagues and made a day of it. The Lerida Estate Winery is a superb venue not only to enjoy some Petanque (the French version of bowling)), but to also sample some beautiful local wines, have a bite to eat in the Cafe and soak up the beautiful setting and atmosphere of the winery and it's surrounds, on the 'shore' of Lake George.
Petanque is about the easiest game to play and with about five minutes of instructions and with a little practice you will be an expert in no time. Petanque is the only game where a glass of wine can be held in one hand while you throw the boule with the other!

MELBOURNE CUP Melbourne Cup
Tuesday 2nd   3:00pm
Flemington Racetrack, Melbourne
Web www.melbournecup.com

The first Melbourne Cup held in 1861 was certainly a dramatic event. According to legend, Archer, the first horse to win the Melbourne Cup, was reported to have walked 850 km (560 miles) from Nowra to Flemington to be a part of a race that one day would capture the spirit of a nation.
While at the time the news of the death of the explorers Burke and Wills may have kept people away from the race, a modest crowd of four thousand watched the seventeen starters and the thrilling lead up. Before the race commenced, Twilight started early and was captured only after he had run the whole course, and tragically, two horses, Dispatch and Medora, had died after a fall.
The following year Archer raced again to win his second successive Melbourne Cup. Although it is rumoured, he again had walked from Nowra to Flemington, many people thought it was more likely that he had travelled anonymously by ship.
Despite his owner's intention to race Archer for a third Melbourne Cup, he was unable to do so because of a technical error. Archer's acceptance nomination to race failed to arrive in time because it was delayed in the post. As a result, owners scratched many horses, in a show of solidarity. This left a starting field of only seven horses that history shows was to be the smallest field of horses to race in the Melbourne Cup.
At ten years of age, Archer fell in a race and was retired to stud but his place in history was forever cemented. The first Melbourne Cup winner was immortalised in the 1984 film Archer.

The festival begins on Saturday at 2pm with the Stan Coster Memorial Australian Bush Ballad Award being held at 8pm. Sunday is non stop music from 10am to 6pm. The event also flows into the town with busking in the street on Saturday, a bush poet’s breakfast and entertainment at various venues in the village leading up to the weekend at the showground.
When Jim Snow opened the first Bungendore Country Muster in 1986 he predicted a great future for the festival and he got it right. The Bungendore Country Muster has continued and in 2006 celebrated its 21st birthday and each year it continues to go from strength to strength.
The Muster is unique in that it is the only “all Australian” country music festival in Australia and has a core policy of existing for the betterment and benefit of the Bungendore community and Australian country music. All money raised during the festival goes to the local community and on improving the facilities for patrons.
The festival is held at the local show ground and over the years the Muster Committee has made improvements with the building of a permanent stage, water tanks and in 2007 assisted with the local community in the installation of an eight cubicle shower block. With the patrons enjoying the atmosphere of staying at the showgrounds this was a much needed improvement.

Are you into recycling?  Do you have lots of “stuff”?  You know, all those things that you have kept for ages “just in case they might come in handy”!  Now is the time to take a hard look at them and decide that turning them into cash while supporting your local community is the way to go.  Here is the perfect opportunity.
On the other hand, do you have an eye for a bargain?  The Great Car Boot Sale is the place on Sunday 28 March!  Stallholders can begin to set up at 7.30 a.m. and the gates will be thrown open to buyers at 9 a.m.
But wait! There’s more! There will be a number of stalls selling local products and promoting our local businesses as well as representatives of our community organisations and clubs.  The Pony Club will be there and refreshments will be available as well as amusement rides and other entertainment for the children. Those stalwarts we all rely on, the Wamboin Rural Fire Brigade will also be there.
The Cost?  $15 per car, $5 per trailer or $25 per truck.
Are you the owner of a local business who would like to raise the profile of your business to the people who live and work here?  Please consider having a stall and seize the opportunity to meet & make new customers at the Great Car Boot Sale.  Be seen to actively support the event where all the profits flow to the local community.
This is the annual fundraising event for the Bywong community and is proudly supported by a number of locally owned businesses:  Flames Fitness, Lambert Vineyards, Cafe D’Lish, Tender Edge Printing, Ellie Merriman from Ray White Bungendore, O’Sullivan Rural Waste, Southern Cross Computing, Koonaburra Wines, Langley & Pino Eyecare, Tulip Top Gardens, and The lake FM88MH listen/requests@bywong.com.au.
For details please ring Bernie Greethead on 6230 3165 or send an email to greethead@hotmail.com.  It’s not expensive but it’s effective.

Every two years in March/April
Welcome to Weereewa: A Festival of Lake George. The festival is held in autumn every two years to celebrate the unique landscape and spirit of the Weereewa Lake George region.
Our aim is to celebrate, conserve and share this awe-inspiring place through arts and community events. This may be an off-road bike ride, dance performance on the lake bed, a scientific forum on sustainable agriculture, a satirical cabaret at the bowling club, kite-making workshops for the very young, or a concert in the local church. We aim to be carbon neutral through several ventures, tree planting, using recycled materials, the Farmers’ Market and Weereewa on the Menu program, both celebrating the great local produce and wines of our area plus encouraging carbon free bike riding!
